Aluminum Company To Expand

BY JOHN REID BLACKWELL

A local aluminum company will expand its plant in Prince George County, investing $28 million and adding 32 jobs.

Service Center Metals Inc. will double the size of its plant in SouthPoint Business Park to 154,000 square feet and add another aluminum extrusion press, tripling the plant’s capacity, said Scott Kelley, the company’s president and chief executive officer.

Kelley said the company has started hiring for a few positions, but most of the jobs will open up later this year.  He would not comment on the company’s current employment level.

The plant makes aluminum rods, bars, shapes and tubing used in the construction, electrical, transportation, consumer products, and machinery and equipment industries.  The company ships extrusions to metal service centers across the U.S.

“Business has been very good, and we are currently operating 24 hours a day, six days a week,” said Kelley, who co-founded the company in 2002 with Randy Weis and Chip Dollins.

The three men were employees of Henrico County-based Reynolds Metals Co. before it’s acquisition by Alcoa Inc. in 2000.

Gov. Mark R. Warner’s office said Virginia competed with California and Tennessee for the expansion.  Warner approved a $50,000 grant from the Governor’s Opportunity Fund to assist Prince George County with the project.  The Virginia Department of Business Assistance will provide training assistance.
